Welcome to the holding webpage for Sligo Passage Tombs (full website coming soon) which is currently in the nomination process for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The wonderful imagery here represents some of Sligo’s passage tombs and their landscapes. These cairns, dolmens and boulder circles were built by Ireland’s first farming communities over five and half thousand years ago. They created something meant to last. Now it is in our hands, to manage today’s threats and challenges, and ensure this extraordinary monumental landscape remains to inspire future generations.
This UNESCO World Heritage Nomination is led by Sligo County Council on behalf of the community, and in partnership with the National Monuments Service and the Office of Public Works. We have begun a multi-year consultation and community engagement process around these sites and landscapes, to learn how they can best be protected and enjoyed sustainably into the future. Over the coming years we will be reaching out to everyone who has an interest in these monuments and places.
